Scene 15. Sam’s New Proposal for the Property Division.

Sam, sitting across from Ben, was unusually excited.

Ben became interested in the reason for this and asked,

“Sam, what is the matter? You are in such high spirits. Tell me what’s the matter, do not keep me in suspense!”

He replied, with no concealment of pride,

“Ben, I inform you that with all due respect to your strategy and tactics in matters of my divorce, I have decided: I agree to all of my wife’s terms.”

Ben stared at Sam in surprise.

“What? But you hired our law firm precisely because you did not want to accept its terms. As I recall, you said you would never go for them. Or did I misunderstand something? What happened?”

Sam leaned back in his chair, put his hands behind his head, and interlocked his fingers. He swayed on the chair’s back legs like a naughty boy, delighted with his prank. A smug smile wandered across Sam’s face. He was enjoying the effect this news had on Ben.

Finally, Sam answered Ben,

“I give up my claim for half of my and Ellen’s jointly gained property. On one condition: I want to keep all the shares in our company. Let her take anything she wants from the rest of our property, money savings, or small investments—anything she wants, except the company.

Here, Ben loosened his tie and unbuttoned his jacket. He leaned back in his chair, just like Sam, with his hands in his pants pockets. Ben’s face was a look of utter bewilderment. Without realizing it, he copied Sam’s pose perfectly.

The lingering silence had to be broken, so Ben asked Sam again,

“But the stock in your joint company, according to your documents, has depreciated. What is the matter, Sam? Why do you want full ownership of such a troubled company?”

Sam, still rocking back in his chair and looking away, said in a dreamy voice,

“I ‘grew up’ in this company, and I want to remain the sole owner of it. Anyone who has ever created his own successful...”

Suddenly Sam was silent as if he had lost his voice.

“That is, a business that used to be successful,” Sam quickly corrected himself.

He continued,

“That one will understand me.”

Ben felt Sam had let him know they were not equal since Ben did not understand Sam’s motive for wanting this.

Yes, Ben was an employee. He was highly skilled but was someone other than the owner of the company he worked for. However, Ben had chosen that path for his career. He did not understand how Sam could give up everything in favor of some near-bankrupt company. Why would he want that company? It was incomprehensible even when Ben realized Sam was attached to this company as its creator. Did he still believe he could pull his business out of a money hole?

There were many examples of entrepreneurs creating companies and saying goodbye to unsuccessful ones. It was the law of business that either the fittest or the fittest survive. But Sam wants a nearly bankrupt company, and that was surprising.
